جزیره کوچک مالدیو در خطر جدی رفتن به زیر آب قرار دارد. افزایش سطح آب دریا در اثر گرم شدن کره زمین، موجب شده است که همه 1200 جزیره- که کشور مالدیو را تشکیل می دهند- در خطر غرق شدن باشند. این جزایر تنها 6 فوت بالاتر از آب دریا قرار دارند وامکان اینکه کل کشور مالدیو به زیر آب رود بسیار زیاد است. با توجه به این بحران، دولت این کشور به تازگی تصمیم گرفته است که جزایر جدید شناور بر روی آب را بسازد. هنوز جزئیات معماری این جزایردر دسترس نیست. اما به نظر می رسد که این جزایر اثرات نامطلوب زندگی در زیر آب را کاهش می دهند و همچنین تغییرات فیزیکی سواحل را در اثر بالا رفتن سطح آب به حداقل می رسانند.

The tiny island nation of the Maldives is under serious threat from rising sea levels caused by climate change. No part of the 1200 islands which make up the Maldives is more than six feet above sea level, so as sea-levels rise, the entire nation will be under water.

 

The government is buying up land in nearby nations as a place to retreat to when the Maldives disappears.

 

Now it appears that the intrepid Maldivians have come up with a new strategy to fight the rising tide: creating mini floating islands!

While exact design details of these new floating islands are still unavailable, Dutch Docklands knows a thing or two about creating water developments using methods and procedures that reduce impact on underwater life and minimize changes to coastal morphology.
